El Jobean is the old settlement at the Route 776 bridge over the Myakka River, laid out in the 1920s by a developer named Joel Bean who scrambled his own name for the town. The boom went bust, and what grew up instead over the following decades is a mix of fishing cottages near the bridge, 1970s block homes on the streets behind them, several manufactured-home communities, and the county's spring-training ballpark on El Jobean Road.
The river is the exposure. Ian's wind came up the Myakka on September 28, 2022, and the surge came with it into the low streets by the bridge. Manufactured-home roofs took the wind worst, because a roof-over on an older home is fastened to the home and not to the ground. Milton in October 2024 added a second round on repairs that were two years old.
